Mrs. Dorothy Dumas Vick, age 94 and a former resident of So. Fulton, TN, died February 9, 2011 at 12:33 a.m. at Christian Hospital in St. Louis, MO.
She was born in Natchez, MS to Dr. and Mrs. A. W. Dumas on December 16, 1918. Mrs. Vick earned a B.S. Degree from Tuskegee University in 1940 and completed all coursework for a Master’s Degree in Education at Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, IL.
Mrs. Vick was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Fulton, KY where she served on the Bishop’s Committee. She was a retired educator who taught at Milton School, 1960 – 1970, and grades 4-6 at Carr Elementary School from 1970 to 1982, in Fulton, KY. After her retirement in 1982, she moved to Paducah, KY, where she lived for 5 years before moving to St. Louis, MO in 2002.
As co-owner of the former Vick’s General Merchandise Store in So. Fulton, TN, Mrs. Vick worked alongside her late husband and co-owner, Harvey O. Vick, Jr. She organized the first Black Girl Scout Troop in the Kentucky Bear Creek Council, was a member of the AKA Sorority, served as president of the Black Tennessee State PTA, and worked as a fund raiser for the St. Paul AME Church.
Survivors include two daughters Vivian Sonja (Dan) Fishco, Prescott, AZ, Sylvia (Carlos) Jenkins, Black Jack, MO, and a son, Harvey (Valeria) Vick of Spring, TX. She also leaves a sister, Gloria Robinson, Natchez, MS and a brother, Johness (Claudia) Dumas, Ypsilanti, MI; eight grandchildren, Sherisse Hawkins, Boulder, CO, Dr. William Fishco, Anthem, AZ; Ilene Veronsky, Bell Meade, NJ; Shanda Mathis, Norcross, GA; Sybil Booker, Philadelphia, PA; Shannon Vick, Spring, TX; Cheryl Turner, Chicago, IL; Kimberly Brooks, Kansas, City; KS, thirteen great-grandchildren, a host of nieces and nephews, and an “honorary” son, Pete Algee.
In addition to her parents and husband, Mrs. Vick was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Marcella Huggings and Marjorie Lawless, and four brothers, Dr. Albert Wood Dumas, Jr., Alexander Dumas, Michel Dumas, and Willard Dumas.
Visitation will be held from 10:30 – noon, Friday, February 18, 2011 with the funeral immediately following at Trinity Episcopal Church in Fulton, KY; Rev. Nick Jaeger will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery, also in Fulton, KY.
