George C. (Cleve) Holladay

He graduated from Murray State Teachers College, Murray, KY in 1937 &
taught elementary school math in Harlan, KY. In December 1938, he began
his 37 year career with the U.S. Weather Bureau as a "Junior Observer" at
Bowman Field, Louisville, KY. He was studying meteorology at MIT in
Cambridge, MA when the United States entered World War II. Mr. Holladay
petitioned to serve in the Army Air Corps and was sent overseas to San
Severo, Italy, where he served as Weather Officer, 12th Weather Squadron
attached to Air Force HQ from May 1944 until October 1945. He achieved
the rank of Captain prior to his discharge.
From 1947-1949, he helped to set up a network of weather stations throughout
the Philippines. Additonal assignements sent the Holladay family to
Philadephia, PA and San Juan, Puerto Rico before moving to Hull, GA in
July 1967. Mr. Holladay was the Meteorologist In Charge at the Weather
Services Athens Station at Ben Epps Field until his retirement in 1/1976.
He was a charter member of the Gordon's Chapel United Methodist Church
"Over Fifty" Club and served as President of Athens Chapter #548 of the
National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE).


He was is survived by a son- Cleveland G. Holladay (Francesca) of
Tallahassee, FL, 2 daughters: Margaret I. Holladay of Tallahassee
and Louise M. Roth (Dan) of Bishop; 5 grandchildren and 2 great
grandchildren, also a brother - Harold Holladay of South Fulton, TN.

He was preceded in death by his wives; (1st) Sallie (Smith) Holladay,
in May 1975, (2nd) Montez (Milam) Holladay in October 2006, his
parents, a brother and 4 sisters.

Graveside services on Monday, May 7, 2007 at the Mt. Moriah Cemetery in Weakley Co., TN. There will be no visitation held at the funeral home and friend may meet at the cemetery for services.
