Joseph Lewis Atwill, age 101, of Fulton, Ky. passed away Fri., Aug. 9, 2024, at the Magnolia Place of Union City, Tenn. He was born July 24, 1923, in Fulton County, Ky., to the late Joseph Lewis Atwill Sr. and Edna (Davis) Atwill. He was a member of the Cayce Baptist Church in Cayce, Ky. Mr. Atwill was a soil conservation technician, a school bus driver, and a farmer. He is also a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force.
Mr. Atwill was an active member of the Gideons International, the Order of the Eastern Star and the Roberts Lodge #172 in Fulton, Ky. He loved being outside and working in his garden and was a part of this community all his life. In addition to his parents, he was also preceded in death by his wife, Helen Louise Atwill, and a sister, Alice Owens.
He was survived by his son, J.L. (Melanie) Atwill, of Fulton, Ky.; two grandchildren, Camiel Atwill (Mike) Taylor, of Martin, Tenn. and Jay Atwill, of Brentwood, Tenn.; two great-grandchildren, Emma Taylor, of Martin, Tenn. and Nick Taylor, of Martin, Tenn.; a brother, John R. Atwill, of Fulton, Ky.; and a special friend, Edna Rose Haney.
Funeral services were held at 3 p.m. Sun., Aug. 11, 2024, at the Rush Creek Church with burial following in the Rush Creek Cemetery. Visitation was held from 12 p.m. Sunday until the hour of service. Memorials may be made to the Cayce Baptist Church, 41 Holly Circle, Fulton, Ky., or Rush Creek Cemetery, 203 S. Home Street, Union City, Tenn., attn: Ellen Petty. Hornbeak Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
