Martha Massie Thomas, 92, passed away peacefully on Sunday,
September 7, 2014, at her home in Lubbock, Texas. Graveside
services will be held at Palestine Methodist Cemetery in Fulton,
KY, where she will be with five generations of her family.
Martha was born on February 4, 1922, in La Center, Kentucky to
Eunie and Lee Massie. She attended Western Kentucky University
where she met Henry Thomas, her future husband, in 1939. They
married on January 3, 1944, in Mayfield, Kentucky, when he was on
leave from the Army Air Corps.
She and Henry had a wonderful life together and enjoyed spending
time at Kentucky Lake in the fall and in Arizona in the winter. She
loved nature and was a devoted bird watcher.
Martha was instrumental in the founding of Lubbock Friends of the
Library and was an active member for many years. She spent countless
happy hours engaged in investigating genealogy. For her, it was a
mystery waiting to be solved.
She was preceded in death by her parents and by her only sister
Saralee Powers.
Survivors include her husband of seventy years, Henry of Lubbock;
daughter and son-in-law, Betsy and Jack Austin of Brea, California;
grandsons Mark Austin, Brant and his wife Marissa Austin, great-
grandchildren June and Lincoln Austin of Orange, California; niece
Patricia Armes of Dallas; great-niece Jennifer Ruckle and great-
great nephews Kyle and Ethan Ruckle of Las Vegas, Nevada.
Private graveside services were held.
